Bio-Engineering Products

Bio-engineering within the context of erosion control and storm water management means the use of natural products to prevent erosion, or to restore and maintain land damaged by erosion in a natural condition.

MCCA, Inc. is an extensive user of modern bio-engineering techniques to prevent soil erosion and to preserve or restore natural beauty without resorting to less desirable and aesthetically harsh manmade techniques such as concrete structures.  Many bio-engineering products are on the market.  The following paragraphs present the most prominent products and solutions.  Please contact us about your specific needs.

Bio Rolls

Bio Rolls constructed of coconut fiber provide initial structural stability by resisting wave action and flow velocity. These rolls provide an excellent medium for plant growth.

During the installation process, young plants can be inserted into the coconut fiber rolls. Sediment is deposited in and around these rolls which create an excellent environment for further development of vegetation.

Upon biodegradation of the coconut fiber, there will be a well developed root structure in the original ground which successfully holds soil in place.

Grand Harbor, Destin FL: MCCA used coconut mats and logs to install a permanent and aesthetically pleasing erosion control solution at a premier resort in Destin FL.

Bio Mats/Blankets

Coconut fiber mats are used extensively by MCCA to stabilize the soil and foster the growth of natural vegetation.  This is especially important in applications requiring re-vegetation of erosion ravaged landscape.

MCCA uses premium coir products from GREENFIX. The woven matrix of the blanket prevents the fibers from being washed away when exposed to runoff water. Heavy weight, high wet tensile strength and high limiting shear stress values of the blanket guarantee a superior performance over all other temporary, organic erosion control blankets with 3 years or less functional longevity.

The blanket has a minimum functional longevity of 36 months.  Use of 100% coconut fiber guarantees a consistent decay of the medium to the benefit of the natural vegetation.  This also prevents the existence of unwanted remnants and residue common to multi-material fabrics.

Beach Restoration, Destin FL.  MCCA uses coconut blankets extensively on the Gulf Coast for beach restoration.  Although coconut blankets have a multitude of applications, their use for beach restoration provides obvious and notable benefits.

The GREENFIX name has a long history of quality and performance when answering erosion control problems. Since the 1970's, GREENFIX has been a leader in blanket manufacturing in the erosion control industry throughout Europe. As a pioneer of erosion control straw blankets, they have brought their experience to the United States.

GREENFIX AMERICA has the blanket that provides solutions. Their line of blankets, made from a variety of natural straws, coir fiber, and polypropylene fiber can promote effective biological stabilization and re-vegetation. GREENFIX AMERICA blankets prevent soil loss, retain moisture, encourage germination, and promotes ideal growth conditions. Their bio-blankets, made from natural fibers and bio-degradable components, can meet the demands for environmentally sensitive site applications.

GREENFIX AMERICA blankets are designed for simple and effective installation. Each roll is individually wrapped and labeled with an "Installation Guide" to facilitate the expediency of on-site construction. Applications for blankets range from gradual to steep slopes, low to moderate flow channels, and low impact shorelines. For all applications, the proper preparation of soil surface is most important for ensuring blanket performance.

When covering the gap between the end of construction and the start of vegetation, GREENFIX AMERICA is your complete source for blankets.
